Song #2 of Honor Migrante "Carrito de Fruta" ((fruit Cart) presents the dignity of working people in the presence fruit vendors who spend their days on the streets of the cities and towns, many time, evading the "authorities," because they don't have a sellers permit. In the case of those who do have a seller's permit, they still spend countless hours dealing with county offices and police agencies making sure their stand or cart complies with codes of the city and county. On most ocassions we see the seller in the streets but not their children, spouse, family and friends who get up at 3 or 4 in the morning to prepare the food, or articles that will be sold during the day.
The song was written as music for the docu-drama by Pepe Urquijo titled: "Fruit of Labor," 2003 www.pepelicula.com in which the day laborer (fruit vendor) opens the doors to his struggles to maintain dignity. I wrote it almost on the spot and was never fully satisfied with it. Before recording it I called one of my closest writing colleagues, Martín Llamas "El Pájaro" and in 2009 we gave it its final polishing to record the vocal track. It is always a pleasure to work with Martín. Enjoy the song and now you can actually download it from itunes or any of the download pages, just search Honor Migrante, Carrito de fruta or Francisco Herrera. And, don't forget, support your local street vendors!
